The Nature of the Internet Scam

Everyone knows what a scam is, right? A scam is when someone tries to get something, usually money, from you for little or nothing. Many times this can result in a disasterous experience for the unsuspecting consumer. Don't get scammed! Take steps to protect yourself and your personal information.

So how do you deal with a situation where someone may or may not be scamming you? The steps are simple, but many do not take notice of the signs. The signs are easy enough if you are wary. If you are not, then watch out, because you could lose money and your identity because you got scammed. Identity theft is a very profitable crime for those who are engaged in it, and it is a very difficult situation to get out of or to change.

Here are some tips to avoid getting scammed:

One of the things you can do to not get scammed is to not give your personal information out to anyone who you do not specifically seek out. I'll tell you from experience, there are many that know how to fool you. I got my paypal account suspended because of one such situation a couple of years ago. While I didn't give out the information, my account was compromised and I can no longer participate in the benefits of having a paypal account. I was fortunate, I didn't give anyone any information that could have been used. What personal information shouldn't you give out? Anything of importance like your social security number, credit card or bank account numbers and in some cases your home address and phone number. Basically, do not five out any information that would allow someone to access you financial accounts. If you are the one who is looking for a service, then fine, give the information, but never give it out unsolicited, especially over the phone or email.

Be wary of email scams. Most scams go into the junk mail box, but sometimes they make it into your inbox. Honest advertisers do use email so not all are out to scam you, but anything that sounds too good to be true, you should suspect, especially those lottery emails.

Other scams simply result in a service provider not providing the service they said they would. The key to avoiding these is to make sure there is a refund policy. If there isn't, avoid that site and look for a new vendor

At some point or another we all experience a scam to varying degrees. The main goal is to avoid internet scams at all costs, but not let wariness interfere with a positive internet experience. Most people selling items on the web do not scam. Being aware of the scams that exist will allow you to distinguish between those that are and those that aren't scams.
